Service/Industry Specialization
Mary Pockl has significant expertise in the not-for-profit industry. For the
past 16 years she has provided audit and consulting services to a variety of
not-for-profit clients. Her focus is primarily in the audit of agencies meeting
the requirements of OMB Circular A-133 and Government Auditing Standards. In
addition, Mary specializes in internal audit and compliance services for financial
institutions. Her focus has been primarily in the area of regulatory compliance,
fraud management and FDICIA related requirements.
Experience
Prior to joining Snodgrass sixteen years ago, Mary was the fiscal director for
a five county Area Agency on Aging and the accountant for a three county regional
council of government in the State of West Virginia. In addition, she served
as the finance director of a United Way. She has also served as a member of the
board of directors for several non-profit (non-client) organizations over the
past ten years. This experience in the industry has allowed her to understand
the audit process from the client's perspective and it has also provided her
with an inside look at the environment under which the non-profit entity operates.
This unique perspective from all facets of the non-profit organization, combined
with her past sixteen years of audit and consulting services experience with
Snodgrass, gives her the edge to provide your non-profit with the value added
services you deserve when contracting with an accounting firm.
In addition, Mary has been involved in the external and internal audit process
for several local financial institutions for the past sixteen years as well.
She currently manages the internal audit outsourcing division for the Wheeling
office. Along with monthly internal audit services, Mary has assisted financial
institutions in the area of fraud management and fraud investigation as well
as FDICIA requirements. From compliance issues to internal controls matters,
she has provided training and assistance to the management and staff of several
institutions as well as their board directors.

It seems that every time I see an old friend or a classmate from school and they
ask me where I work and what I do there, they always respond in the same manner. "You
were always good at math in high school. I figured you would be an accountant
or math teacher". My response to them is that accounting is so much more. I have
never looked at my profession as a career that deals with numbers only!
My career has been so rewarding because of the people I have met and assisted
throughout the years. I believe that to do my job well, I need to know my client's
business and I also need to know my client. Whether my staff and I have helped
a client through a financial crisis, a routine regulatory exam or just through
the traditional audit process, it has been very rewarding to hear my clients
tell other associates in their industries how they should use Snodgrass as their
auditing or consulting firm. A referral from a client is one of the best praises
an accountant can ever receive!
So while I enjoy working with numbers, it is not the reason I have stayed in
this profession. The people that I get to work with on a year to year basis are
the reason I stay in public accounting. It is my clients that make my job interesting
and rewarding. I learn as much from them each year as I hope they learn from
me.
